Locomotives

MD-40

The typical locomotives of the railway are MD-40s made by Mining Engine Works of Pálfalva (Salgótarján) in the 50ies. These locos are usually have 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, pre-combustion engine type D-413 (often replaced by more powerful D-414). The transmission is mechanic, with three gears and cone-wheel reverser. Actually, there are 11 locos in Hungary, seven of them in Kemence.

More detailed technical description of this locomotive type.

2244,4102 (P-2)

Locomotive P-2 (2244,4102) is the symbol of the railway, because it is the only surviving MD-40 with such bodywork. Originally, it worked on the Királyrét line, but in the end of the 70ies it has been moved to Kemence, as a relief loco next to P-5. It has been abandoned in 1992, it worked only once in 1994 for a special train until 2000. From that time it is working continuously.

2244,4105 (P-5)

The locomotive P-5 (2244,4105) arrived to the railway in the first half of the 50-ies. Mostly it worked in Kemence, but occasionally it encountered in Bernecebaráti and Diósjenő, too. Due to technical problems, it has been abandoned in the middle of the 80-ies. It has been renewed for the "Day of the Railway 2001".

2244,4112 (PN-2)

The locomotive no. PN-2 has worked in the peat mine of Nádasdladány (abandoned in 1997) and has been arrived to Kemence in November 2000, with two more locos. This engine is owned by Tibor Bacsinszky. The loco out of order, its renewal still only a plan, because many parts are missing.

2244,4113 (PN-3)

The locomotive no. PN-3 is originated from de peat mine of Nádasdladány, which has been abandoned in 1997. Reconstruction of the loco was finished in 2007, tested by the National Traffic Authority on 28.02.2008. The engine has several test runs and some problems were found, but from 2009 this engine is also used by the railroad. The locomotive is owned by Valentin L. Schmidt.

2244,4119 (Hospital engine :)

This loco is from Nádasdladány, too. Its KBK-code no. is 2244,4119. Its owner is Zoltán Szűcs. He is thinking about renewal, maybe as part of the exhibition.

2244,4121 (MOFA-1)

This loco has been bought by five members of our club from the wallboard works in Mohács in the beginning of 2005. Then it came through a complete renewal. It was tested by National Traffic Authority on 28.02.2008. It runs regurlary.

2244,41xx (Loco from Pankasz)

It is a rebuilt MD-40 with an undefinied gearshift. It was arrived from Pankasz (western Hungary) on 21.02.2008. It is not in traffic yet. It is owned by dr. Zsolt Kelemen.

Mine locomotives type BM-50

There are two mine locomotives type BM-50 can be found in Kemence. The Mining Engine-works of Budapest made 100 of them between from 1963 to 1964 for miscellaneous mines all over Hungary. Only four pieces survived: one exhibited in Visonta, one more (out of order) can be found in Diósd; two pieces are in Kemence: they came from Feketevölgy coal mine (abandoned in 2000) in March 2001. These locos can be transported to Kemence by the support given by the Ministry of Environment. The vehicles have been repainted by Tibor Goda and György Szántó.

2225,0028

The locomotive no. 28 (2225,0028) is out of order now. We are planning its renewal. According to our plan to use it, its transfer to the stronger railway track in Felsőpetény is also planned.

2225,0074

The locomotive no. 74 (2225,0074) is the last working BM-50 type locomotive in the world, but according to its heavy axle load, this engine runs on the railway occasionally, but sometimes we use it on the lines of the terminus.

Coolies on the railway

The small shunters called "coolies" are made by Building-trade Engine Works (Budapest) in the first half of the 60-ies for little works (especially brickyards) with inner railway network. According to it, these coolies have comparatively weak, one-cylinder MIB engines (which have been often replaced by two-cylinder Slavia engines). Their axle base is very small, so they can be used on curves with 4-5 m radius. The gauge can be easily set to 500, 600 or 760 mm. Some of them arrived to Kemence after the closure of the brickyard in Hajdúböszörmény. On 14th June 2003 a coolie-ruin arrived, too, which has been worked in a water farm in Hortobágy.

2111,0001

This coolie has one-cylinder MIB engine, but we use it very rarely. Its owner is Valentin L. Schmidt.

2111,0002 (Mad Max coolie :)

This coolie came from the brickyard of Szentes, its owner is Dr. Zsolt Kelemen. Its in working order, but its low frame can be easily trapped by level crossings.

(...)

2111,0005

This coolie (as you see on the picture) isnt in a really good condition. It came from the water farm of Hortobágy, where it has been used for servicing an another loco, so its actually a wreckage. It has been moved to Biatorbágy during summer 2006, and it can be used as a "spare parts-mine" only.

2111,0101 (Bözsi)

2111,0101 (CN 40-46, "Bözsi"). This coolie has already got Slavia engine. Before its move to Kemence, its owner, Gábor Tóth completely restored in Biatorbágy. This coolie had gray colour before, now it is carrying the original livery of the coolies. The plate on the nose of the loco was owned by a Haflinger bantam made by Steyr. The coolie is in working order, usually we use it for light load (2 or 3 2-axled coaches) trains.

2111,0102 (Feri)

2111,0102 (CM 26-87, "Feri"). This Slavia-engined coolie has been restored by Gábor Tóth, too. The difference between it and its twin the gear, so it can be crawl slower than "Bözsi".

2228,0001

We got this loco type UE-28 for free from Bodajk, where it was sitting out of order. On 4th March, 2006 the loco and a tipper came to Kemence together. Its speciality that the original 4-gear transmission has been replaced by an SD-9 reverser, so practically this loco has only one gear in both direction (in Bodajk, the track was about 150 m long only, so the higher speed wasnt really needed). Its engine is a 2-cylinder Csepel, which is connected to the reverser by a compensating gear (which came from a ZIL lorry). Its renewal is planned.
